Learning how to heal yourself can be challenging if you don't know where to begin. With so many different brands of medicines and first aid kids available in convenience stores, it's easy to overlook some of nature's most simple remedies.
Yet nature often knows best and has in fact, all the herbal medicines we are seeking. It is simply our perception and understanding around the concept of natural healing that needs to change.
Herbs, plants and spices have been used since ancient times for their medicinal benefits. With the advance of the internet, more people are becoming aware; gaining knowledge of and learning how to integrate these natural health products into their life. As a result, they often find simplicity and most importantly - pain relief - without any of the unwanted side effects that conventional medications are accompanied with.
That's why I am so passionate about exploring the world of natural health products. There is beauty in showing people the clarity and good health they can experience when they tap into nature's knowledge that is all around us.
I recommend the following natural health products, as not only have I incorporated them into my life for my own personal use...but they have also given me great joy and clarity about myself - mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
1. Essential Oils
They are gaining in popularity right now but essential oils have been around for centuries and used since Ancient times for their therapeutic and healing benefits.
Some of my favourite essential oils include Lavender, Frankincense, Marjoram, Myrrh, Lemon and Wild Orange. Each essential oil works deep on a cellular level to create ambience, balance and healing in the body.
Essential oils provide aromatherapy that can enhance your physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual wellbeing. Each essential oil can stimulate unique healing benefits due to its individual therapeutic properties.
You can use essential oils for a variety of purposes including: wound healing, immune support, detox, weight loss, insomnia and digestion issues to name just a few.
Many people use essential oils to create natural cleaning products due to their antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that make them excellent for use as an alternative to store bought cleaning products.
Frankincense is one of my favourite essential oils as it can support your general immunity, along with reducing inflammation. I also find Frankincense useful for going into deeper states of relaxation during meditation.
Lavender oil can relax the senses, making it ideal when wanting to fall alseep.
Lemon is a natural stimulant that also has antibacterial properties, meaning its excellent for cleansing the system.
Marjoram is excellent for reducing spasms, pain and may even prevent bacterial infections.
Myrrh oil is a natural antiseptic that can also reduce infections and inflammation of skin cells.
Wild Orange is energising and can uplift the mind, body and senses.
I personally choose to use doTerra essential oils as they offer Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils. This means there are no added fillers, synthetic ingredients or harmful contaminants that may otherwise reduce their efficacy.
Miso is fermented soybeans that are often used as a base for soups and stews instead of vegetable broth.
There are different types of miso including:
White or kome miso, made from soybeans and rice - this has a light, sweet flavour
Yellow or mugi miso is made from barley and soybeans
While red or hatcho miso is made from just soybeans
When miso is used in food, it's important to not add this until the end of the cooking process, to protect its probiotic properties. As a healthy probiotic food that's often added to Asian cooking such as soups, miso can support digestion by adding beneficial microorganisms to your digestive tract.
Taking a good probiotic supplement alongside fermented foods like miso, kefir, sauerkraut and pickles is highly recommended.
There are strong links between good gut health and mental/emotional health. The gut is actually considered as the second brain. Hidden inside the walls of the digestive system, the enteric nervous system (ENS) is two thin layers of more than 100 million nerve cells lining your gastrointestinal tract from esophgagus to rectum.
As researchers are finding, poor gut health and digestion in the gastrointestinal system may send signals to the central nervous system. This can trigger mood changes and altered emotional responses.
Taking a good probiotic to feed the healthy bacteria inside your gut is one of the best ways according to studies, for lowering stress hormones, reducing anxiety and it may even combat depression.
3. Hemp Seeds
As a rich source of essential fatty acids, vitamins, proteins and minerals - hemp seeds are a great nuritrious addition to your diet. Rich in Vitamin E, hemp seeds are also high in phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron and zinc.
Hemp seeds contain over 30% fat - especially linoleic acid (Omega-6) and alpha linolenic acid (Omega-3). They also contain gamma-linolenic acid.
Many of the health benefits of Hemp Seeds include reduced risk of heart disease, reduced symptoms of PMS and menopause, improved digestion, and improvement for skin disorders.
By adding a full, slightly nutty flavour to foods, hemp seeds are a simple and delicious way to add the above health benefits into your diet and lifestyle.
I love adding hemp seeds to my salads, smoothies or served sprinkled on top of a banana with peanut butter for a nutritious start to the day or just as a high-energy snack.
